The Oakland Public Library has bestowed upon Chitra Divakaruni's Mistress of Spices the "One book, one city" award. There's an angle here, which is that Chitra was also one of my mentor's students. In honor of the award and to raise money for a new state-of-the-art library they invited my friend George Brooks to perform at Yoshi's. The band included the sarod master, Ashish Khan, Kai Eckhardt and one of Zakir Hussein's tabla students. In an unusual move, George played piano. It was a beautiful evening of inspired do-goodness. Thanks George!
